August Meeting Notes

Well kids, we are having fun !

David-Yager-hardening-wood

At our August gathering at Russ’ shop, David Yager was our guest demonstrator. He showed us how he hardens wood by infusing a water based epoxy he called Cactus Juice with a canister and a vacuum pump. David also said that coloring can be added into the epoxy. Interesting process for sure.

He also mentioned how he uses desiccant and an oven (not the one in his kitchen) to dry wood. We didn’t do any turning, but plan to make up for it next month with an all day turning workshop again at Russ’ place on September 9th from 9am until around 4. Remember to bring your lunch.

We added another $37 to our treasury from the raffle. Many of the raffle pieces were donated by David Yager… some black walnut and some bay. Four other members paid their $20 annual membership also.

David also mentioned that Matt Yager has a fine stash of walnut and other desirable wood for turning, and that Brian Clark has cypress and a big kiln for drying lumber.

Thank you David Yager and we look forward to seeing you next trip back to Mendocino.

We enjoyed some “Show & Tell” time.

Les had an assortment of bowls and boxes. Very nice and certainly inspiring.

Russ showed some turning that was other than wood. Can you believe golf balls? He’d turn through the outer shell, peel off half of the cover, then carve and paint the faces in the centers.

He also showed on from his collection of shoes that he likes to carve.
